KUALA LUMPUR: India are set to lose their Indonesian coach Mulyo Handoyo (pic). And that is sure to throw a spanner in the works as India gear up for the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, in April.
Mulyo, who led his blue-eyed boy Taufik Hidayat to a gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, had transformed the Indian men’s singles department since taking charge in January this year.
Under Mulyo, India won five Superseries titles in 2017 – four from K. Srikanth (Indonesian Open, Australian Open, Denmark Open, French Open) and one from B. Sai Praneeth (Singapore Open).
Srikanth is seen as one of the strong contenders for the men’s singles gold in the upcoming Commonwealth Games. The others vying for the title are Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei and England’s Rajiv Ouseph.
